The Glory of the Morning Routine
Anyone that reads about productivity has heard that a morning routine is the foundation of optimization and getting shit done. Being a parent, working full-time, and launching my own business, I feel like I’m always on the lookout for how to optimize my productivity and time. I hate the feeling of being rushed in the mornings, and I know that the morning can be tough in a busy household. But I have found that by practicing a morning routine, it does set up my day for success.
Now people will say you need to do the same things every day for a morning routine, but I’ve not found that to be the case for me. I usually have 30-45 minutes in the morning to myself. Every morning I do a thought download. I journal my thoughts and feelings, hopes for the day, how I feel physically and mentally, and any to-do’s or reminders that I didn’t capture from the night before.
Journalling usually takes 5-10 minutes, and sometimes it’s not the first thing I do in the morning, but it’s usually done by 9 am.
I believe that a morning routine is the bedrock of productivity. Morning routines and rituals are the keys to productivity. It allows you to honor both your highest self and your future self. How I appreciate and value the morning routine makes it easier to set the structure of my morning to ensure it gets done (hello 5 am wake time). Other activities that I add to my morning routine include: meditating, a yoga sequence, working out, reading, taking a quick walk in nature, or a small household chore. These morning routines and rituals set you up to prioritize yourself for the rest of the day.
For me having something I do for myself each morning sets me up to continue prioritizing myself as needed for the rest of the day.
Giving myself the flexibility to choose what I do in the morning allows a dose of consistency but still offers flexibility. I enjoy following my intuition as to which routine is going to resonate and serve me best for that day.
