Try a Decision Detox

Try a Decision Detox

A decision detox is something you can do that helps simplify your life. Some sources estimate you make 35,000 decisions in a day. While this number seems a little high, I know that I do need to make many decisions each day.

One way to improve your decision-making skills is to try a decision detox. A decision detox minimizes the number of decisions you need to make in a day.

So, I started looking into different ways to simplify my morning routine to leave the house on time and stress-free. I hate the idea of starting my day in a mad rush, agitated, and worst of all, late! With a small child, it's helpful for all of us to start the morning on a positive note, and that means not rushing around and scrambling for different things. My motto is the morning routine starts the night before. I make sure my bag is ready to go, clothes are out, and whatever food is traveling with us is decided and packed.

To minimize the number of daily decisions we need to make. We plan and prep for the week, by having a family meeting every weekend to understand what's happening for everyone in the week. From there I then decide what I am going to wear for the week. I review my calendar and see what events, meetings, or work I'll be doing to help find clothing that best fits the occasion. I then set all of those outfits out in my closet, which makes it very easy to get dressed in the morning.

Steve Jobs is infamous for his "work uniform," by wearing the same thing every day you remove one of your daily decisions. I think my practice is similar but still allows me to have some creativity and fun with my fashion choices.

By pre-making the decisions, I have a lot of freedom to do other things. My brain space is free from clutter as I start the week and each day. Currently, I'm trying a new practice of scheduling everything I need to do in my calendar so instead of looking at my to-do list and then making a decision, I plan it out in advance. I’d love to hear from others, what decisions they’ve automated or eliminated from their life!
